Project management across international time-zones.
SaaS Magazine design.
SaaS Magazine is a publication for the SaaS community. SaaS stands for software as a service – essentially, subscription-based online businesses. Spotify is a well-known example, but there are tens of thousands of SaaS companies around the world. If you need help project managing your magazine design.
It’s a fast-developing business model, and SaaS Mag’s publisher FE International’s core business facilitates SaaS mergers and acquisitions. But SaaS has a vibrant and animated community – including business founders, executives and financial backers – and SaaS Mag was created to serve this community.
This is a great fit for Toast Design Services.
SaaS Mag is information-packed as it contains detailed articles to inform financial and marketing decisions for investors; at the other end of the scale there are articles aimed at start-ups who are hungry for basic principles, tips and advice. In addition, there are interviews and profiles of the major players in SaaS.
We approached the design of SaaS Mag with a consistent grid and typographic layout that is still flexible enough to give each article a distinct look – the feature articles are open, with balanced white space where necessary. The same grid also supports denser text-heavy articles for news and reports. And as some articles cover financial and performance data, there are sections based around comparison tables and infographics. There’s a real variety to SaaS Mag.
This sort of variety is expected for an industry magazine of this type so of course, it’s something we handle well. There’s one slightly unusual wrinkle with SaaS Mag though – we’re a UK agency, and FE International is headquartered in New York.
Latest project management tools.
To manage projects like this we use Basecamp – a SaaS platform itself, appropriately. Basecamp is an online project management portal for both us and our clients. Each project gets a Basecamp homepage, where all other aspects can be managed as threads.
In the case of SaaS Mag, each article gets its own thread where FE International uploads text, images and notes; and we upload our proofs to the same thread for the client’s approval and feedback. It’s a one-stop-shop for content, file sharing and feedback. And putting everything in threads means it’s easy to trace each article’s progress without wading through irrelevant information, as you would trying to follow an email trail.
Basecamp automatically emails update notifications to users – on a schedule they set themselves – to make sure nothing gets lost in the mix. It’s an intuitive and useful approach to project management. And, crucially for our clients, it takes some of the pain and chaos out of producing major publications – even when they’re on the other side of the Atlantic.
